Dialysis Center

Dialysis is a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly. It often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned.

RS Mediros' Dialysis area is beautifully remodeled and provides treatment for individuals with end-stage kidney disease. Two treatment modalities are offered, hemodialysis in which the blood is cleaned by means of an artificial kidney, and peritoneal dialysis that is done at home and uses the abdominal peritoneum to filter the blood.

Peritoneal dialysis is as effective as dialysis given in RS Mediros and more gentle. The dialysis can be performed at intervals that are convenient to you during the day, by you or via a machine at night. RS Mediros call these techniques continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD).

The Dialysis Unit is located within the RS Mediros. It is surrounded by windows, providing a view of the outdoors and a bright airy feel. There are some stations and state-of-the-art equipment. Each station has its own personal television.

The staffs at RS Mediros are highly skilled in caring for patients with kidney disease. Your care is a team effort. The team consists of the patient, a nephrologist physician, a nephrology nurse, dialysis technician, social worker and dietitian.

The dialysis team works together with patients and families to provide education, improve levels of function and help maintain productive lives.

Nephrology

Nephrology specialists in RS Mediros diagnose, treat kidney diseases, and care for patients requiring kidney replacement therapy, also known as renal replacement therapy, including dialysis and kidney transplant patients. Many diseases affecting the kidney are systemic disorders, which are conditions or illnesses that affect more than one part of the body, like high blood pressure. These disorders may require treatment from more than one specialist.

Reasons patients are referred to nephrology specialists include:

  • Chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Electrolyte disorders or acid/base imbalance
  • Hematuria, blood loss in the urine
  • Hypertension, or high blood pressure, that has failed to respond to multiple forms of anti-hypertensive medication or could have a secondary cause
  • Kidney stones, usually only recurrent stone formers
  • Proteinuria, the loss of protein especially albumin in the urine

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts on your artery walls. Hypertension is blood pressure greater than 140/90. The top (systolic) number is the force exerted as your heart contracts and pumps blood. The bottom (diastolic) number is the force exerted in the moment of rest between contractions. Untreated hypertension can lead to heart or kidney damage.

You need to know that:

  • All adults should have their blood pressure checked at least once a year.
  • Diagnosis involves several blood pressure measurements over time. A single instance of pressure above 140/90 does not necessarily mean you have hypertension.
  • Blood pressure can often be lowered by reducing your sodium (salt) intake or by incorporating a moderate amount of exercise into your lifestyle.
  • If lifestyle measures don't work well enough, medication is usually effective.

Choosing RS Mediros Heart and Vascular Department for the treatment of hypertension is the best choice because the physicians specialize in helping patients learn to control blood pressure through a combination of behavior change and advanced medicine. The Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease takes a multidisciplinary approach to helping you prevent heart disease and stroke — and that includes getting your blood pressure in check.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus)

Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is a disease that causes your body’s immune system to attack its own cells and tissues. It causes periods of inflammation to various parts of the body. It can affect your joints, tendons, and skin. It can affect blood vessels. And it can affect organs such as the kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain. It can cause rashes, fatigue, pain, and fever. The heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain are the organs most affected. Severe lupus can cause harm to organs and other serious problems.

Lupus is an ongoing (chronic) disease. Lupus affects each person differently. The effects of the illness range from mild to severe. Symptoms of lupus may come and go. These are sometimes known as flare-ups, periods of remission, and relapse. Lupus has no cure, but medications can help symptoms. And you can help manage lupus by living a healthy lifestyle and working with your doctor. In children, lupus often attacks the kidneys. This can lead to kidney damage and kidney failure. In some cases, lupus can be fatal.

There currently is no cure for lupus, but it can be controlled. After providing the patients with a comprehensive evaluation, RS Mediros develops an appropriate treatment plan. At RS Mediros Lupus Center, patients have access to the latest treatment options for lupus, including:
• Immunosuppression (suppressing immune system abnormalities responsible for tissue inflammation)
• Targeted B-cell therapies (medications directed against white blood cells that produce antibodies)
