Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Department provides a comprehensive range of pharmaceutical services to the patients at Alexandra Hospital. The principal objective is to provide patient-focused pharmaceutical care in order to achieve definite outcomes that improve patients’ quality of life. The department has a skill mix of pharmacists, pharmaceutical technicians, pharmacy aides, administrative staff, and porters.

Alexandra Hospital has a busy dispensary. The dispensary is responsible for medicines procurement and management, distribution of medicines to wards and clinical areas and non-aseptic (extemporaneous) compounding. In addition, the dispensary provides a limited dispensing service for patients on discharge and for outpatients to ensure seamless pharmaceutical care.

Clinical pharmacists work closely with doctors, nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients receive optimal pharmaceutical care while attending the hospital. Clinical pharmacists have a key role in monitoring and reviewing patients and their medications, providing medication counseling where appropriate and liaising with community pharmacy colleagues and GPs to promote seamless pharmaceutical care after discharge.

Medicines Information service strives to optimize patient care through the provision of accurate, up-to-date, unbiased information on medication use to health care professionals within the organization, both in terms of individual patient care, and in the provision of general information on safe use of medicines. Medication Information can be contacted via telephone or via clinical pharmacist or technician.

Imaging

The imaging department provides a service for patients in the hospital and for patients referred directly from their General Practitioners.

The department is composed of consultant radiologists, sonographers, radiographers and administrative and clerical staff. The staffs have comprehensive experience across a wide range of clinical areas with specialists at radiography and consultant level.

The imaging department has a state of the art digital imaging system which means that the staffs can send reports on patients' scans and x-rays electronically to GPs and other departments in the hospital.

Laboratory Services

In a hospital lab, the staffs do testing on clinical specimens. A clinical specimen is anything from a patient. Common specimens to test are blood and tissue, but the specimen can be anything — sweat, hair, fingernails. In the lab, the majority of tests are done on blood, urine, tissue, cerebral spinal fluid, or other bodily fluids.

The Laboratory at Alexandra Hospital is divided into separate sections, depending on the technology being used or the specific type of testing being done. Clinical Chemistry concentrates on tests done on the fluid portion of blood, as well as some other bodily fluids. Hematology looks at the cellular components of blood and coagulation involved in clotting. Microbiology deals with infectious diseases, which can include diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or tuberculosis. The Blood Bank deals with transfusions and Donor Services receives blood from donors to supply the Blood Bank. Phlebotomy collects blood specimens for testing. Histology and Cytology deal with anatomic pathology.

Staffed by pathologists, lab technologists and lab technicians. The lab is in operation 24/7. Aside from being able to cross match units of blood and arrange for blood transfusions, the lab is always ready to accept specimens for culture, cardiac enzymes, drug monitoring, and basic testing such as coagulation testing, complete blood count (CBC), electrolytes, and chemistry assays.
