Colorectal Surgery

The group of colorectal specialists offers “state of the art” diagnosis and therapies for the full spectrum of colon and rectal disorders including cancers, benign polyps, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas, and defecation-related functional disorders.

While the colorectal surgeons spend much time in the operating room, at least one member of the staff has office hours each day of the week in order to maximize the patient’s ability to be seen promptly.

The goal is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to ensure that you and your family members obtain the best of outcomes. Singapore General Hospital recognizes the complexity of colorectal diseases and provides the experience and wide range of expertise that is required for effective management. The patients of Singapore General Hospital have access to the very best medical and radiation oncologists who specialize in gastrointestinal tumors. When the need arises, the colorectal surgeons are able to quickly and easily interact with the colleagues in gastroenterology, cardiology, and internal medicine.

The Division offers “state of the art” minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgical methods that minimize the trauma to the abdomen and also decrease pain and shorten the hospital stay of patients who require colon or rectal resections. Division surgeons are also developing new, less invasive, combined laparoscopic and endoscopic methods for the removal of large benign polyps.

The Colorectal Division has the largest and best staffed anorectal physiology facility that evaluates and treats patients with rectal prolapse, rectocele, constipation, anismus, incontinence, and other defecation-related problems.

In addition to the extensive clinical services, the Colorectal Division also has a clinical and basic science research unit that is developing and testing safe anti-cancer drugs that can be used during the month before and after surgery.

Breast Center

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. An estimated one in every eight women will have a breast cancer diagnosis. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer, Singapore General Hospital understands that you may feel overwhelmed. But you can take comfort in knowing that advances in treatment options along with early detection mean that many women survive breast cancer.

Screening exams for breast cancer can save thousands of lives each year, by finding cancer in its earliest stages, even before there may be any symptoms. Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer through regular mammograms and other advanced scans, such as breast MRI and breast ultrasound, may improve outcomes for breast cancer treatments. Talk with your physician about your family history, lifestyle and other risk factors, and when you should schedule your screenings for breast cancer.

The breast imaging options accommodate your risk factors for breast cancer including dense breasts. Singapore General Hospital offers 3-D mammography called digital breast tomosynthesis, a type of mammogram that creates three-dimensional views of the breast tissue. The multiple images help improve early breast cancer detection through greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities. 3-D mammography is recommended for women between the ages of 40 and 50 and/or who have dense breasts.

Singapore General Hospital also offers high-resolution breast ultrasound, breast MRI, stereotactic core biopsy, Ultrasound and MRI biopsy, as well as bone density testing. The Breast Imaging Centers are staffed by board-certified radiologists, nurse navigators, genetic counselors and breast surgeons.

Singapore General Hospital Breast Cancer team is here for you from the time of your breast cancer screening through your survivorship. The staffs are ready, with cutting-edge treatments, as well as educational, emotional and practical support to help guide you and your family on the journey ahead. Singapore General Hospital wants to make your experience less daunting and empower you to become an active partner in your treatment and recovery.

Singapore General Hospital offers breast surgeons skilled in less-invasive surgery, specialists in radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, plastic surgeons with expertise in breast reconstruction, access to breast cancer clinical trials, psychological counseling, physical therapy, personalized care management by nurse navigators, survivorship support programs offering complementary medicine, support for financial concerns and other issues outside of the scope of medical care, and connections to other breast cancer survivors. The goal is to give you the best possible outcome for your breast cancer in a supportive and caring environment, and to establish a life-long relationship to support your health.

Singapore General Hospital Breast Cancer Program offers the most advanced surgical options ranging from breast-conserving lumpectomy to simple and modified radical mastectomies that are skin- and nipple-sparing. The hospital also offers nonsurgical breast biopsies and access to an experienced plastic surgeon to discuss breast reconstruction options after lumpectomy and mastectomy.

Palliative Care

Våre ansatte

Singapore General Hospital features a team approach to delivering healthcare. This means that patients are examined and treated by a variety of medical professionals rather than a single doctor. Here are some of the professionals that you may meet during your stay at the hospital:

  • Physicians

Singapore General Hospital is both a clinical care centre and a teaching hospital. That means you will be cared for by team of doctors that can include:

an attending physician – the staff doctor responsible for your complete medical care;
a resident – a doctor continuing his/her education to specialize in one field of medicine; and
a medical student – a student doctor in his/her final year of medical school.
Attending physicians work on a rotation system so it is possible your care may not be supervised by the same physician throughout your stay. However, be assured that each attending physician is fully informed of your health-care needs.

If your personal physician is not assigned as your attending physician, he or she is encouraged to visit you regularly in the Hospital and to keep in close touch with the attending physician. You may also call your personal physician to tell him or her about your hospital stay. If you have questions about these arrangements, please speak to your primary nurse, personal physician, or attending physician.

  • Physician Assistants

Physician assistants (PAs) are healthcare professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. A PA can make medical decisions on their own and provide services to diagnose and treat patients. They may also conduct physical exams, order and interpret tests, write prescriptions, provide preventive health education and assist in surgery.

  • Specialists

When people have complex or serious medical problems, the attending physician sometimes requests that a specialist evaluate the person and recommend how to best diagnose and treat the problems. For example, the specialist may be a doctor who is extensively trained in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the heart (cardiologist), kidneys (nephrologist), or cancer (oncologist). In other cases, the specialist may be a surgeon who has particular expertise in one area, such as the brain, spine, and nerves (neurosurgeon) or muscles, bones, and joints (orthopedic surgeon).

  • Nurses

Registered nurses play an essential role in your care while you are here. They help assess your condition regularly, administer and monitor your treatments and medications, discuss all aspects of your care with you, and make sure your physician is aware of any concerns.

In addition, registered nurses with advanced knowledge and practice regularly provide expertise and offer support to patients and families. They and all the nurses work collaboratively with the health-care team to ensure you receive the best care possible.

  • Dietitians

Proper nutrition care is an essential part of everyone's overall health, particularly if you are ill. The dietitians work with the medical team to develop and implement nutrition care plans for patients after assessing their nutritional needs. If you need special nutritional care because of a condition, injury or illness, they will help you choose the best food for your needs, monitor what you eat and whatever supplements you might be taking, and make sure you understand any important instructions.

  • Pharmacists

Pharmacists are part of your health care team and work with your doctors and nurses to provide the best care for you. Pharmacists review all medications ordered for you in hospital and check for allergies, drug interactions and other potential problems. Pharmacists continually monitor and review your medication needs during your hospital stay and teach you about your medications.

  • Technicians

The technicians, technologists and therapists are specially trained to contribute to your care. These skilled staff members work under your physician’s direction and are proficient in the specific techniques that aid in preventing, diagnosing and treating your illness.

  • Laboratory Services Team

The Lab is staffed with experienced, licensed Medical Technologists, board-certified Pathologists, and a team of highly skilled Phlebotomists.
