Palliative Care

Palliative care is care given to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer. The goal of palliative care is to prevent or treat, as early as possible, the symptoms and side effects of the disease and its treatment, in addition to the related psychological, social, and spiritual problems. The goal is not to cure. Palliative care is also called comfort care, supportive care, and symptom management.

Palliative care is given throughout a patient’s experience with cancer. It should begin at diagnosis and continue through treatment, follow-up care, and the end of life.

Often, palliative care specialists work as part of a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care. This palliative care team may consist of doctors, nurses, registered dieticians, pharmacists, and social workers. Many teams include psychologists or a hospital chaplain as well. Palliative care specialists may also make recommendations to primary care physicians about the management of pain and other symptoms. People do not give up their primary care physician to receive palliative care.

Palliative care is given in addition to cancer treatment. However, when a patient reaches a point at which treatment to destroy the cancer is no longer warranted, palliative care becomes the total focus of care. It will continue to be given to alleviate the symptoms and emotional issues of cancer. Palliative care providers can help ease the transition to end-of-life care.

A patient may also receive palliative care at home, either under a physician’s care or through hospice, or at a facility that offers long-term care.

Palliative care can address a broad range of issues, integrating an individual’s specific needs into care. The physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment may be very different from person to person. For example, differences in age, cultural background, or support systems may result in very different palliative care needs.

Pathology and Anatomy

RS Dharmais' Pathology and Anatomy laboratories provide a complete range of advanced testing capabilities to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients throughout the Hospital.
The Department's anatomic and surgical pathologists are divided into specialized subgroups within the laboratories that focus on chemical, endocrinologic, toxicologic, radioimmune, flow cytometric, hematologic and microbiologic tests.

In particular, RS Dharmais pathologists play an integral role in the care of cancer patients by analyzing tumor samples to make precise diagnoses and to stage cancers. The expertise of the pathologists is essential in determining the best course of treatment. Reports from pathologists also help gauge a tumor's response to therapy to determine its effectiveness and plot a new course of treatment if necessary.

The pathologists comprise a large and active group of researchers who conduct both basic technological and applied pathology investigations. Areas of concentration in which researchers have made advances include liver pathology, basic cancer research, electron microscopy, oncologic immunopathology and the effects of alcohol on the body.

Oncology-Radiation

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with cancer, your doctor has probably told you there are typically 3 types of cancer treatment: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation oncology.

Radiation treatment involves killing cancer cells with the use of radioactive beams - highly concentrated radiation delivered in the exact spot to kill the tumor. Advanced technologies direct pre-programmed radiation beams while the patient lays still on the treatment table. The team uses advanced imaging to plan a radiation dose to the tumor, so the beams mainly hit the cancer cells and not healthy tissue.

Careful planning by the multidisciplinary team of physicians, dosimetrists, radiation therapists and physicists is the key to fighting cancer effectively with radiation therapy. At RS Dharmais, the physicians are nationally-known for their contributions to the field of radiation therapy.

Radiation treatment can be a long process, sometimes stretched out for weeks. With this in mind, the staffs are committed to providing the best possible experience for the patients during their radiation treatments. The staffs are friendly, courteous and efficient - in fact, the department received the highest quality marks for customer service. RS Dharmais has an open, spacious waiting areas and convenient access to the parking area. As a part of a large, comprehensive cancer center, RS Dharmais also offers the patients additional care and support.
